Second Call for Research Funding Opportunities 2008

Following the successful application for additional funding rcbcwales has the following exciting opportunities:

 

First into Research

First into research grants will support projects lasting approximately one year for newcomers to research or those wiishing to update research expertise for one day a week, to work on projects seeking answers to questions relevant to Nursing, Midwifery and the Allied Health Professions. Recruitment will be through the participating institutions. Vacancies at Bangor University, Cardiff University (School of Nursing & Midwifery) and Glyndwr University only.

 

PhD Fellowships

Applications are invited from eligible registered health professionals for PhD Fellowships. PhD appointments will be full-time for three years (part-time applications of no less than 3 days per week commitment will be considered). Vacancies at: Bangor University, Cardiff University (School of Healthcare Studies and School of Nursing & Midwifery), Glyndwr University, Swansea University, University of Glamorgan, University of Wales Institute Cardiff.

 

Senior Health Career Research Scientist

This senior postdoctoral appointment will be for up to two years at a salary within Nursing, Midwifery and AHP levels.  The Fellowship is available to suitably qualified eligible registered health professionals.

 

Previous applicants to any of the above Fellowships need not submit an expression of interest since they will have received correspondence where appropriate.

 

Applications should have a commitment to the themes and priorities of WORD and the Institution to which they apply. These include:

  • Prevention and early intervention
  • Chronic conditions management
  • Integrated management of complex care
  • Service organisation and delivery

We are looking for proposals which demonstrate impact on education or practice and with thorough dissemination plans. Projects with an emphasis on quantitative research are encouraged. Appropriate professional registration is a requirement of each post. Appointments will be made with established research groups within the Departments and Schools of Nursing and AHP across Wales (UK) listed below. Applicants are welcome to apply to more than one institution but should indicate in a covering letter the research area that is of particular interest. Successful applicants will be encouraged to be resident in Wales for the duration of the award.

 

Expressions of interest for the PhD Fellowships and the Senior Health Career Research Scientist are invited and should be submitted by or before noon on 17th November 2008.  Applications successful for transition will be invited to submit full proposals by 10th December 2008. Interviews are scheduled for 7th & 8th January 2009 with successful candidates beginning at the end of January 2009.

 

The closing date for First into Research applications is 10th December 2008, with successful applicants starting in January 2009.

Research Funding Opportunities 2008 Now Available


RCBC Wales logo with funding organisationsFollowing the successful launch of rcbcwales (research capacity building collaboration) in 2005 with an initial investment in doctoral and postdoctoral Fellowships in Wales, a second phase of funding is now available from the Wales Office of Research and Development for Health and Social Care (WORD), and the Higher Education Funding Council for Wales (HEFCW). This exciting opportunity for new and experienced researchers represents a package of research training including:

‘First into Research’ funding in the form of one day per week release (for academic staff/eligible registered health professionals) to undertake a research project with training linked to one of the participating HEIs in Wales. Recruitment will be through the participating Institutions.

Additionally, applications are invited from eligible registered health professionals for up to 14 PhD and two Postdoctoral Fellowships:

PhD appointments will be full-time for three years. (Part-time applications will be considered).
Postdoctoral appointments will be for up to two years at a salary within Nursing, Midwifery and AHP levels. (One Postdoctoral Fellowship will be available for applicants within 5 years of obtaining a PhD and the second available to suitably qualified eligible registered Health Professionals).

2008 Funding Alert!

Over the next few months a number of funding opportunities will become available through rcbcwales. These will include:


1. 'First into research'
Research project awards of £9,000 per annum to enable day release for those wishing to dip a toe in the water of research in Nursing and/or the Allied Health Professions in Wales. Each of the rcbcwales collaborators will offer one award in 2008. The funding will pay a contribution towards buying out the researcher's time and also contribute towards supervision costs in the host HEI.

Application will be by way of a downloadable application form and guidance notes. Selection will be through the potential host institution. Further details will be posted when the new contract goes live in April. In the meantime, interested parties should make contact with the appropriate HEI for initial discussions.

2. Masters in Clinical Research
Awards for support of a Master's Degree in Clinical Research will be announced in 2009.

3. PhD Fellowships
This scheme will offer up to 14 full time PhD Fellowships - two per collaborator, commencing 2008. Funding will include a tax free bursary of £12,600 per annum, tuition fees at 'home' rates plus a contribution towards travel and research support costs. Applications for part-time studentships also may be considered. Application will be a two stage process with an initial expression of interest. Successful applicants will be invited to submit a full proposal. Interviews will be held in early July 2008.

Full applications will be sent for external review by two appropriate expert referees.

4. Postdoctoral research Fellowship ( 40% overheads)
This scheme will support one postdoctoral research fellowship at a starting salary of £32,000 for two years with research support costs of around £1,000 per annum. Applicants should be within five years of their PhD award.

Application will be a two stage process with an initial expression of interest. Successful applicants will be encouraged to submit a full proposal and those selected for interview will present to an appointment Committee comprising one representative from each collaborator, one external panel member and an external Chair.

Full applications will be sent for external review by two appropriate expert referees.

5. Senior research scientist Fellowship ( 40% overheads)

This scheme will support one research fellowship at a starting salary of £40,000 for two years together with research support costs of around £1,000 per annum.

Application will be a two stage process with an initial expression of interest. Successful applicants will be encouraged to submit a full proposal and those selected for interview will present to an appointment Committee comprising one representative from each collaborator, one external panel member and an external Chair.

Full applications will be sent for external review by two appropriate expert referees.

  • All research projects should reflect the research priorities of WORD and the employing Institution.
  • Applications for projects using quantitative methods will be positively encouraged.
  • Applicants must have IELTS rating of 7 or above with no grades below 6.
  • Further details will be given when the Notes for Guidance and Application forms are available.

Professor Donna Mead, Dean of the Faculty of Health, Sport and Science at the University of Glamorgan, who heads rcbcwales coordinating centre said,“The announcement of this additional funding illustrates the importance which the Welsh Assembly Government and HEFCW places on ensuring that there are sufficient numbers of nurses, midwives and allied health professionals who are trained in research.“Individuals from these professions provide the largest amount of health care and it is absolutely essential that the evidence base exists to underpin the services which they provide.”

A £1.2 million grant to enable research into major health conditions and improve patient care has been announced by Welsh Assembly Government Health Minister Edwina Hart.
