Well Done to Dr Edna Astbury-Ward

Congratulations to Dr Edna Asbury-Ward on being awarded The Chancellors Prize for her research at Glyndwr University.  Edna's research achieved "the best overall performance of the graduating cohort" and was eligible on more than one of the strict criteria.  The judges in reaching their decision considered the performance of all eligible Postgraduate Research students and Edna was eligible for the prize in the opinion of the internal and external examiners through achieving/demonstrating;

"A performance at the viva voce and in the thesis or dissertation and/or research reports which is regarded by the examiners as being particularly strong in terms of subject knowledge and expertise"

and

"Evidence that a particularly challenging subject area for the Research Degree has been chosen and that the thesis or dissertation and/or research reports and viva voce demonstrate that the candidate has through his or her research gained a strong understanding of the particular challenging subject area".

Edna's award will be presented by Lord Barry Jones, Chancellor of Glyndwr University at the graduation ceremony on October 28th 2010.  Edna is thrilled with this award and thanked RCBC Wales for her PhD scholarship opportunity.

Well done Edna!

Congratulations to Jenny Welstand!

RCBC Wales would like to congratulate PhD student, Jenny Welstand, on winning the award for best oral presentation at the European Cardiovascular Nursing Annual Conference in Geneva. The conference was well attended with nurses from all over Europe and further a field.

Jenny presented the findings from her study about the process of being and becomming a heart failure patient for the first time. The judging panel felt that Jenny's style and presentation skills had been excellent, and were impressed that the study gave voice to patients. They were also impressed with the way in which Jenny managed to weave her qualitative methodology using Gadamer's hermeneutic phenomenology through the presentation.

Jenny is currently in the writing-up phase of her PhD entitled; The Heart of the Matter; caring for patients with heart failure.

Well done!

ViPER Event for First into Research Fellows

Glyndwr University, Wrexham

On Monday 18th January RCBC Wales held a ViPER event at Glyndwr University, Wrexham for its First into Research fellows. Each researcher presented details of their research topics with the aid of a poster and group discussion. The ViPER format (which stands for Visual Presentation and Expert Review) was used as a basis to encourage interaction and discussion within the group.

Each researcher produced a poster about their chosen research topic and then made a short presentation explaining its content. The researchers’ project supervisors were present and were asked to contribute by identifying some of the key themes from each presentation, thus encouraging further debate amongst the group. Five First into Research fellows presented their projects to an audience which included the project supervisors, members of the research team, researchers’ colleagues and RCBC Wales representatives.

The RCBC Wales First into Research Award supports projects lasting one year and is relevant to newcomers to research or those wishing to update research expertise. Awards cover agreed funding for one day a week to work on projects seeking answers to questions relevant to Nursing, Midwifery and the Allied Health Professions. The research topics presented on at the ViPER event included:

  • Decision-making in clinical practice (by Nikki Lloyd-Jones, Glyndwr University)
  • An evaluation of instructors’ views and experiences of delivering Mental Health First Aid training in Wales (by Julia Terry, Swansea University)
  • Scapulohumeral assessment in the clinical setting: The development of a robust measurement tool (by Michael Smith, Cardiff University)
  • An exploratory study examining the impact of stroke on spousal relationships (by Peter Jones, Bangor University)
  • Is the pain experienced by infants during immunisation affected by method of administration? A Randomised Controlled Trial (by Anne McGowan, Cardiff University)
The event was introduced by Professor Donna Mead OBE of the University of Glamorgan and chaired by Professor Joy Merrell of Swansea University. Martin Semple, Head of Institute at RCN Wales, attended to present each researcher with a certificate and plaque recognising their RCBC Wales First into Research award. Congratulations to all the researchers and thank you to all who attended.
